Heads up, the International Grooves World Music Series is back! Join us Friday, June 5th at 6 p.m. as we open Kenny Dorham’s Backyard for an evening of outdoor, family-friendly fun.

The International Grooves Series, first introduced in DiverseArts’s 2012 summer programming season, is a celebration of a rich, multicultural mix of musical disciplines through showcases that honor tradition yet also encourage cross-cultural collaboration. Throughout the summer, there will be many opportunities for audiences to enjoy a wide range of culture-based musical performances that not only entertain, but also connect the East Side to the Austin’s diverse cultural influences.

This Friday, the International Grooves World Music Series has much to offer with four globally-focused live performances, arts & crafts vendors, local food trailers, and plenty of space for picnics and dancing. Families, couples, and singles alike will find something to enjoy from the evening’s event.

Admission will be $10 at the door. Kids 12 and under enter free, and there will be discounts available for families.

The event is BYOBeverage, but please no glass.

Featured Musicians:
Ahmed Garcia and Muse Oasis – The Ahmed Garcia trio includes guitar, bass, and doumbek (a traditional Middle Eastern hand drum). Ahmed and company have taken the best of both worlds, Belly Dancing and Heavy Metal, and have melded them into a seamless world expression of power and peace, dance and steel. The band often plays American desert music/Middle Eastern belly dancing music for a dancer or troupe of belly dancers. For more information on Ahmed Garcia, please visit

Austin Global Orchestra – Musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds met in the thriving music scene of Austin, Texas, and decided to create the Austin Global Orchestra in early 2012. Comprised of members from all genres of music in the Austin panorama, the concept of “world music” brought them together — music which traverses boundaries, where the freedom of spontaneity of pure expression engage the wisdom and steadfastness of various global traditions in a sensual and spirited dance. Huerta Culture – Huerta Culture plays dance music for parties. The band mixes cumbia, ska, reggae, hip-hop, blues, rock, and balkan influences to create a sound that has been dubbed ‘psichocumbia’. With 4 singers in the band sometimes all switching verses throughout a song and singing in English, Spanish, and Quechua (an indigenous language of Bolivia), Huerta Culture keeps arrangements dynamic and eclectic. The phat bass and rhythmic keys are accompanied by a wizard trumpet. Some songs also feature the guacharaca and the Andean pan pipes. In 2014 Huerta Culture released the full length album HOMEGROWN. Executive Steel Band: Executive Steel Band plays all types of music on steel drums: Blues, Reggae, Calypso, Samba, Funk, Soca, and general Happy Music! ESB encourages audience participation and is glad to officiate a fun fun fun Limbo contest for the kids — young and old. The band is known for its original Caribbean styling of steelpan, percussions, and bass guitar, with smooth vocal sounds, made famous in New Orleans. Look into Executive Steel Band more on their Facebook page.
